“I spent time with Bill Walton about five years ago as part of his "game changer" award for the fields and futures/bowtie ball celebration in Oklahoma City. Enduring, personable, committed, eloquent, respectful, dignified, loquacious, gifted, sincere. In short, in the presence of greatness. He will absolutely, positively be missed” -Rick Horrow

Bill Walton, an iconic figure in the world of basketball, has left an indelible mark both on and off the court. Born on November 5, 1952, in La Mesa, California, Walton's journey in basketball began in high school and quickly rose to prominence. As a collegiate player at UCLA under the legendary coach John Wooden, Walton led the Bruins to two consecutive NCAA championships in 1972 and 1973, earning the title NCAA Player of the Year three times. His dominance in college basketball was a precursor to his professional career.

Walton was selected as the first overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite battling numerous injuries, he showcased his exceptional talent, leading the Trail Blazers to their first and only NBA Championship in 1977. Walton's performance earned him the NBA Finals MVP, cementing his place in basketball history. He later played for the San Diego Clippers and the Boston Celtics, where he contributed to another NBA Championship in 1986, earning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

Beyond his on-court achievements, Walton's influence extended to his charismatic personality and profound insights into the game. After retiring from professional basketball, he became a beloved broadcaster known for his colorful commentary and deep appreciation for the sport. His voice and perspective added a unique dimension to basketball coverage, resonating with fans and players alike.

Walton's impact was not confined to basketball. He was an advocate for health and wellness, drawing from his own experiences with chronic pain and multiple surgeries. His resilience and positivity in facing personal challenges inspired many. Walton also contributed to various philanthropic efforts, supporting education, youth programs, and environmental causes, embodying the spirit of giving back to the community.

As we commemorate Bill Walton's life, we celebrate a remarkable career filled with triumphs, his contributions to the game, and his enduring legacy as a passionate advocate for positive change.
